Privacy Notice

This explains what we collect and how that information is used, in plain language.

What we collect

  • Your account: your name and email address. If you sign in with Google, Google gives us your name and email rather than you typing them.
  • Optional profile details: a mobile number and a profile photo, if you choose to add them. Neither is required and you can leave both blank.
  • What you follow: the schools, clubs and teams you choose to follow.
  • What you submit: scores and match updates you report, and confirmations of other people's reports.
  • Technical diagnostics: if something breaks, our error monitoring records things like your browser, device type and which page you were on, not the content of what you typed. We also count page views to see which parts of the app get used.
  • Your IP address: seen briefly when you use the app, and used to stop one device flooding the service with requests. We don't store it against your account.

What you have to give us, and what happens if you don't

Your name and email address are required. Without them there is no account, and an account is currently needed to follow teams, add fixtures or report scores.

Everything else is optional. You can leave the mobile number and profile photo blank and use Scoreboard Live normally. Nothing is withheld from you for leaving them out.

Why we collect it

Purely to run the app: keeping your follows and profile in sync across devices, showing the right notifications, and letting you and other supporters report and confirm live scores together.

We don't use your data for advertising, and we don't sell it to anyone.

Who helps us run it

We use a limited number of specialist companies to host Scoreboard Live and keep it running. They work only on our instructions. They cannot use your information for their own purposes, cannot sell it and cannot pass it on. Giving your information to a company that runs a service for us is not the same as sharing it with somebody else, and we don't do that.

They are bound by written agreements that require them to protect your information, and they are independently audited against recognised security standards.

Some of them operate outside South Africa, so your information is stored and processed outside the country, under agreements requiring protection comparable to what South African law expects.

One thing worth knowing, because you can see it yourself: signing in with Google is your choice. If you use it, Google confirms who you are and tells us your name and email address. We never see your Google password.

What other people can see

Scores, fixtures and results are visible to anyone using the app. That is the point of it: a score is only useful if the people following that team can see it.

We do not show your name against anything you report or confirm.A score reads as “someone at the game”, and the number of people who confirmed it is shown instead, so others can see a real person was there without seeing who. Our Community Guidelines explain why.

Your email address and mobile number are never shown to other users.

Children

Accounts are for adults. You must be 18 or older to have one. Scoreboard Live is built for parents, guardians, coaches, managers and supporters.

Nothing here is a record about a player. Fixtures and team pages name teams and age groups, such as “U14B Hockey”, never an individual player, and we don't collect names, photos, results or any other detail about the children who play in the games.

If you believe a child has created an account, or that something identifies a child, tell us using Contact Us and we'll deal with it.

Keeping it safe

We take reasonable steps to protect your information, and the companies that run services for us are held to the same standard. If something goes wrong and your personal information is exposed, we will tell you and the Information Regulator, as the law requires.

Your rights

You can:

  • See what we hold about you, and ask us to correct anything wrong.
  • Ask us to delete it, or to close your account.
  • Object to how we use your information.
  • Complain, if you think we have handled your information badly.

There's no self-service way to do the first three yet, so use Contact Us and a real person will take care of it. Deleting your account removes it from Scoreboard Live promptly. Backup copies held by the companies that run our infrastructure age out afterwards, on their own schedules.

Two things deletion does not cover, both deliberate:

  • Score reports stay. Nothing reported is ever deleted, because a record people rely on cannot quietly change. Your name is not attached to any of it publicly, and our own record of who reported what is kept only while it is useful for spotting bad reporting, then permanently stripped of anything identifying you.
  • Your account details go. Name, email, mobile number, photo and follows.

You can change or clear your name, mobile number and profile photo yourself at any time from your Profile.

If you'd rather complain to someone other than us, you can go to the Information Regulator: Woodmead North Office Park, 54 Maxwell Drive, Woodmead, Johannesburg, 2191. enquiries@inforegulator.org.za, 010 023 5200, or toll free 0800 017 160.
